The Learning Center

The Learning Center at St. Vincent Pallotti High School is a program designed to assist students with learning differences to succeed in a competitive college preparatory program.  The majority of our participants have a diagnosis of ADHD and/or a specific learning disability; however, we have worked with students who have other disabilities that impact their learning, including Asperger’s syndrome, Tourette’s syndrome, and various physical disabilities.

The Learning Center program has three different levels of support.  The Level I students participate in a daily resource class where the content material of the core courses is reinforced, and organizational and study skills are practiced and refined.  Level II students do not have a resource class; they receive accommodations and assistance with content area classes during their lunch or after school.  Level III students tend to be upperclassmen that require minimal intervention.  The program facilitates the acquisition of self-advocacy skills beginning with each student’s understanding of their learning differences, thus enabling the student to request accommodations at the college level.

Accommodations

Students in The Learning Center are required to complete the same homework assignments and projects as assigned to all students enrolled at St. Vincent Pallotti High School.  Possible accommodations include modified testing where tests are shortened to be completed in one class period or extended time on a test can be allowed.  Notetakers can be arranged for students who have difficulty with this skill and teachers often post their notes to Edline.  All accommodations granted must be supported and documented in a psycho-educational evaluation.

Application Process

Admission to the Learning Center is competitive as space is limited.  Only students enrolled in the program will be allowed to receive accommodations even if the non-Learning Center student has documentation of a diagnosed disability.  Application to the program occurs during the regular admissions season and the following procedures are required:

  • Complete the St. Vincent Pallotti High School application (online form) (print form)
  • Complete the application for The Learning Center (online form) (print form)
  • Send official 7th and 8th grade transcripts
  • Take the Archdiocesan placement test
  • Send a copy of the latest psycho-educational testing, completed within the last three years
  • Interview with the Director of the Learning Center

It is also highly recommended that potential candidates schedule a shadow visit at Pallotti with a Learning Center student and attend the Pallotti High School open house scheduled during the fall semester of the year previous to enrollment.
