Description:  This year-long course introduces basic grammar patterns and vocabulary.  The emphasis is on the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Culture is highlighted through stories, games, movies, projects and the study of current events.


Spanish II 4251
Prerequisite: Spanish I
Credit: 1.0

Description:  This year-long course affords a deeper analysis of basic Spanish grammar and conversational techniques, utilizing cultural research, songs, films, etc. The class gains a broader and more well-rounded spectrum of linguistic experiences. The course goal emerges as that of preparing a student to read and write as well as speak and think at a higher level of linguistic proficiency.


Honors Spanish II 4251H
Prerequisite: Spanish I

Description:  This year-long course is designed for any student who demonstrates high achievement in a Level I foreign language class or on the Foreign Language Placement Test. The course emphasizes a more in-depth study of vocabulary and cultural topics in addition to the grammar of the Level II program.


Spanish III 4351
Prerequisite: Spanish II
Credit: 1.0

Description:  This year-long course expands upon the activities of Spanish I and Spanish II more fully. Reading and writing as well as speaking skills are elevated to a higher linguistic level.  A research project in Spanish is a course requirement. The ability of the student to converse only in Spanish is strengthened still more in Spanish III.  One of the course’s goals is the transformation from spoken English to spoken Spanish.


Honors Spanish III 4351H
Prerequisite: Spanish II
Credit: 1.0

Description:  This year-long course increases each student’s proficiency in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.  It will be conducted in Spanish as much as possible.  Grammar will include the compound tenses, commands, and the subjunctive mood as well as a review of material presented in the lower levels. Various aspects of Hispanic culture will be studied.


Honors Spanish IV 4451H
Prerequisite: Spanish III
Credit: 1.0

Description:  This year-long course expands the focus of the previous year to emphasize the cultivation of more advanced reading and writing as well as research skills.  The student is expected to be able to work more on his/her own inside and outside of a definite classroom environment.  Textual material and research work become more advanced at this stage as well as preparatory to further study at the university level.  More complex conversational skills will be practiced.


Honors Spanish V 4551
Prerequisite: Honors Spanish IV
Credit: 1.0

Description:  This year-long course is for the serious Spanish student who is committed to improving his/her oral fluency, reading comprehension, writing skills and mastery of grammar.  The class is conducted entirely in Spanish. Students are expected to read extensively, research cultural topics and make oral presentations.  Advanced Placement level materials are used and students can opt to take the Advanced Placement exam if desired.


French I 4161

Description:  This year-long course introduces the student to the balanced-skills approach to language learning.  Listening and speaking skills are cultivated and the importance of proper pronunciation is stressed.  Ample opportunity is given for the students to develop their reading and writing skills.  French culture is treated as an integral part of each lesson as well as “special topics”.


French II 4261
Prerequisite: French I
Credit: 1.0

Description:  This year-long course continues the balanced-skills approach as introduced in Level I.  The course continues to be audio-lingual because the listening and speaking skills are cultivated and the importance of proper pronunciation is stressed.  Ample opportunity is given to the students to develop their reading and writing abilities. French attitudes and customs pervade the dialogues in the readings, the line drawings, photographs and many of the exercises.

Description:  This year-long course is designed for students demonstrating high achievement in a Level I foreign language class or on the Foreign Language Placement Test.  The course emphasizes a more in-depth study of vocabulary and cultural topics in addition to the grammar of the Level II program.


French III 4361
Prerequisite: French II
Credit: 1.0

Description:  This year-long course is a continuation of the balanced-skills approach to language learning as introduced in Level I and II; the Level III program has the transformation from spoken English to spoken French as a major goal of the course.

Prerequisite: French II
Credit: 1.0

Description:  This year-long course continues to emphasize the listening comprehension, reading, writing and speaking skills.  The course will be conducted totally in French and all materials studied will be in French.


Honors French IV 4461H
Prerequisite: French III
Credit: 1.0

Description:  This year-long course has the same basic approach and format as Levels I-III but represents a step up in maturity consistent with the capabilities and interests of fourth-year students.  French IV follows the same organization and contains the same lesson elements as the previous Level courses.  The following changes and special features will be explored as well. The students are asked to read more in French (sections of the text which were formerly in English are now in French). There are more opportunities for free expression in French.


Honors French V 4561H
Prerequisite: Honors French IV
Credit: 1.0

Description:  This year-long course is designed for the students interested in continuing their French studies.  A review of previously learned grammar as well as grammatical and vocabulary topics generic to the Level V abilities will be studied.  The reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension skills will be enforced.  Hands-on projects will enable the students to further develop their language skills at this honors level. Students can opt to take the Advanced Placement exam if desired.


Latin I 4171
Prerequisite: None
Credit: 1.0

Description:  This year-long course introduces the student to the basic grammatical concepts of the Latin language.  They include the four verb conjugations and the five noun declensions as well as the case uses.  There is an emphasis on classical culture and it is explored through readings in both English and Latin.  


Honors Latin II 4171H
Prerequisite: Latin I
Credit: 1.0

Description:  Latin II will build upon the skills acquired in Latin I. Students will complete most of the grammatical structure of the language and enhance vocabulary. Towards the latter part of the year, students will be exposed to original readings in classical Latin, primarily Julius Caesar's Gallic Wars. A cultural component, looking at the history of ancient Rome, will complement this course.


Honors Latin III 4371H
Prerequisite: Honors Latin II
Credit: 1.0

Description:  Latin III will be based on adapted passages from ancient authors.  Students will encounter the Subjunctive, Deponent Verbs, more Impersonal Verbs, the Ablative
Absolute, the Passive Periphrastic, Gerunds, Gerundives, and additional sophisticated grammar concepts. The fact that our daily lives are still greatly influenced by the contributions of the Ancient Romans will be highlighted. The influence of Latin on English will also be emphasized.
